The International 9.5mm Festivals

There had been co-operation between the various 9.5mm cine clubs in Europe for many years, this certainly became more esssential once proper commercial supplies of 9.5mm cine equipment and filmstock ceased during the 1960s. In fact the gauge probably did rather better from then on for a few years, mainly because of the real enthusiasm from 9.5mm users and dedicated 'cottage industry' dealers.

A number of amateur film competitions have always been organised around the world, but for all cine film gauges. However in 1976 the first attempt at an International 9.5mm Film Festival resulted in a one day event on the 24th April 1976. Since then various European 9.5mm Clubs have taken turns to organise this event.

The 9.5mm film gauge had only really been popular in European countries, because the originators, Pathé were based in France and the main subsiduary Pathéscope, was British based. Whilst UK and French colonies also used 9.5mm to some extent, the sheer distances meant that it became much easier for a few European countries to organise a joint 9.5mm event. It fell to countries like France, the Nederlands, Germany, and the UK to take turns to run this event. (In fact Spain began to run their own separate event at Calella, which still continues today).

Naturally in addition to being run as Festivals, these events soon became an excuse for a pleasant holiday break, including tourist visits and social occasions as well as the 9.5mm amateur film competition.

With the virtual demise of E6 reversal colour film manufacture, it remains to be seen how much longer these events will be able to continue with film competitions. Sadly the ever increasing age of film enthusiasts may well see the eventual death of these film events coinciding with the deaths of the filmmakers themselves!!

Luckily I am still alive and kicking, so will try to document many of these 9.5mm International Events on the following pages - just give me time to dig out all the details!! (gln - Jan2016)
