Advert in The Mini-Cinema magazine dated Dec 1950

Peak Films first appeared with a display advert in the "Amateur Cine World"
magazine dated November 1948 with a small range of twelve 16mm subjects
in colour and black & white. Within a year or so 8mm titles were added.
The managing director, J.S. Frieze (an ex army colonel) had previously been
involved with Clapham Park Film Studios Ltd. of 201-205 Clapham Park
Road, London S.W.1 who had released one or two 16mm shorts -
('Clapa Minifilms') - including RS1 "
London West" & RS3 "Circus Thrills"
- both later appearing as Peak releases.

It is interesting that none other than Michael Caine (yes - the Michael Caine)
worked at Peak Films in the early 1950s as an office / odd job boy. In his
autobiography he mentions this and that he soon got fired for messing up the
lighting when they were filming an upmarket Jewish wedding dinner.

A young Michael Caine at Peak

The company's first address was 171 Victoria Street, London S.W.1, but
in February 1954, Peak Film Productions, (J.S. Frieze and Co. Ltd.)
moved to 37 Devonshire Street, London W.1.

By 1951 a limited range of the Peak titles were launched in 9.5mm;
these were printed by Pathéscope for Peak Films. However sadly by
the mid-fifties 9.5mm prints were being sold off as sales were rather low,
a note from J.S. Frieze, managing director of Peak Film Productions, in
the Amateur Cine World Magazine dated March 1955 stated "It is with
regret that we are withdrawing from the 9.5mm market, but it has been
unprofitable from the start ... with our thanks to those who have
purchased our (9.5mm) films in the past... "

J.S. Frieze

Peak Films also issued a range of 2 foot 16mm Kodachrome film loops, intended for a hand turned toy projector which I believe
they also sold (a tin-plate upright model ?) - maybe someone still has one, or a photo - think they were 63/- (£3.15 these days!)
The film loops appear to be clips from the normal colour films above. Although the boxes are labelled, the film clips were untitled.
A few titles are listed below - being Kodachrome they all still have lovely colour.

As one can now see from the extra titles below, these 16mm loops were also issued in black & white in 2 foot and 8 foot lengths.

C501 COL 2ft HORSES CANTERING
C503 COL 2ft BRITISH TEAM PARADING
C508 COL 2ft SKATER PERFORMING
C512 COL 2ft HM THE QUEEN

Meccano Magazine advert from 1955

At some time Peak also produced quality Kodachrome 35mm colour slides, mostly UK travel and events
Typical set of Peak 35mm colour slides
Earlier 35mm colour slides were advertised as "Nuchrome" - actually Kodak Eastman colour
I now have a set of these - many thanks to John Berthiaume - sample pictures below

Peak 35mm "Nuchrome" colour slides (Edinburgh scenes)
(sadly the colour has faded badly, slides are probably from the 1950s!)

Advert in Movie Maker magazine Octiober 1976

Just spotted these adverts in the Movie Maker magazine, so Peak Films was still up and running, having moved into the
new Super 8mm magnetic sound market. I can't recall much about these RKO titles - they were released on 16mm by
Robert Kingston Films I think. I wonder when Peak actually dissapeared from the scene, no doubt Colonel Freize was much
older by now!

I would always be interested in purchasing 9.5mm Peak releases and 16mm Peak colour releases
