'ALICE'
Cartoons On 9.5mm

from Grahame L. Newnahm B.Sc.

Walt Disney

Before the days of Mickey Mouse and friends and the age of talking pictures, Walt Disney produced a range of cartoons titled "Alice In Cartoonland" usually including a real life actress Anne Shirley, then Virginia Davis and eventually Margie Grey. Luckily for us vintage film enthusiasts, all the cartoons included 'Alice' in the titles! Also luckily for ninefivers a few 'Alice' cartoons managed to appear on the 9.5mm film gauge, but mostly in France, released by Pathé-Baby.

Just a few titles were released in France on 9.5mm by Pathé-Baby, but sadly none were released on 9.5mm in the UK. All these 9.5mm prints had French titles and were silent. Most had a running time of around 7 minutes, so most of the 9.5mm prints seem virtually complete, just with different main titles.

I have tried to list all the 9.5mm film releases below. Use of the many illustrations in the French Pathé-Baby house magazine "Le Cinema Chez Soi" (The Home Cinema) and access to many of the original cartoons has enabled a few more 9.5mm titles to be identified. Maybe there are still a few more to spot?

Watch a 16mm optical sound print of
- "Alice In The Jungle" US 1925 ("Gigoto Sur Le Seuil Dans La Jungle")

Watch a 16mm optical sound print of - "Alice's Balloon Race" US 1925 ("Enlevez Le Ballon")

Watch a 16mm optical sound print of - "Alice The Jail Bird" US 1925 ( "Gigoto S'Evade")

Watch a 16mm optical sound print of - "Alice's Egg Plant" US 1925 ( "Une Revolte Aux Usines Pondoir")

(I guess these prints available on YouTube are re-issues with sound added)

Sadly I currently have no 9.5mm French Pathé-Baby 'Alice' prints - I would love to buy one please!

"Alice's Egg Plant" USA 17May1925

Little Alice and Julius the cat operate an egg factory. The hens are a bit lazy, but Julius cracks the whip. An out-of-town chicken arrives, only she's a labour agitator, Little Red Henski from Moscow, Russia, who comes courtesy of the I.W.W. Soon she has the hens striking for "shorter hours" and "smaller eggs". Alice and Julius need to fill an urgent egg order. They spot two roosters fighting. They organize a pugilistic event, and charge each hen one egg admission. Alice and Julius fill their order and drive away ... but the load slips off, breaking all the eggs. - David Steele IMDb

There is an excellent DVD released by
VCI Entertainment which includes 10 of
the Alice cartoons (rather better quality
than those on YouTube!) & bonus features
(Luckily it includes most of those released
on the French Pathé-Baby 9.5mm film gauge)
